Postcard Delivery Periods
Once a year, the German newspaper "Die Welt" is involved in testing the delivery periods for postcards mailed via post. Postcards are simply mailed simultaneously from around the globe to the same address where their arrival is monitored. This year, the newspaper's staff organized a worldwide postcard mailing campaign from 68 countries. Although, most of the postcards found their final destination, the cards posted from Cuba, Luxembourg, Nepal and Palestine (West Banks) never arrived.
Additionally, we must share an amusing true story from Belgium. One particular postcard, delivered from Brussels, would take 83 years to reach its recipient, only 45 kilometers away! In 1926, a Belgian soldier in Brussels wrote a postcard to his folks in Opbrakel, a small village located only about 45 kilometers away. It read: "If you haven't sent the shirt yet, then do it quickly, now!" He waited in vain as the card slipped behind the counter at the local post office and remained undiscovered until 2009. Finally, it was delivered to his daughter Rosa - 83 years later. Despite the delay, she exclaimed: "I've never been happier to receive a postcard!"
