Participants Involved in the Greeting Card Panel

The Greeting Card Panel consists of 10,000 German private citizens both in the old and new Federal States. The participants are aged ten years and older and are selected to represent each Federal State on a quota sampling basis, taking the following demographic features into consideration:

age
sex
size of the place of residence
region

This method of sampling ensures that the participants are representative of the total population with regard to the demographic features listed above.

The information given by the Greeting Card Panel reflects the purchases made by German private citizens*; it neither provides any information on purchases made by foreigners nor on those made while on holiday**. Purchases made by companies, authorities and public institutions are likewise not included.

The participants receive a calendar page which is to be filled in with details concerning their weekly purchases of cards. At the end of each week the participants return their completed calendar pages. The data are collected centrally and analyzed every four months. The panel thus functions on a diary system basis.

* Foreigners cannot be included due to the high fluctuation of that total group.

** Purchases made on holiday (e.g. local view postcards) are predominantly made by peoplewhose fixed abode is in another Federal State or abroad in the respective place where they spend their holiday. These groups cannot be subsequently included in the panel.
